Support Bike to School Week and make cycling a habit your child will have for a lifetime

Insync as a family bike brand is supporting Bike to School Week, which begins across the UK today to encourage more people to leave the car at home and complete their journey to school on two wheels.

Organised by cycling and walking charity Sustrans and the Bikeability Trust, Bike to School Week offers the perfect opportunity to start children off on the road to staying active.

Riding a bike to school brings numerous benefits, from reducing fuel emissions to increasing safety around a school by cutting down the number of vehicles parked outside.

Then there are the health benefits of regular exercise, getting some fresh air into their lungs and giving them the all-over workout cycling provides.

Not only that, but starting the day actively can be a huge boost to mental health, clearing the head and easing any stresses, leaving children ready for a full day of learning.

Whether cycling as a family group, or older children are setting off on their own, it's important to keep safety in mind. Before you set off, ensure bikes are roadworthy by checking tyre pressures, and seat and handlebar heights to ensure children are sitting in the right position.

Helmets are essential and bright clothing, and bike lights in the darker months, are necessary to make sure everyone is seen.

Even if you're planning on being there, brief your children on road safety rules and the etiquette on cycling around pedestrians, for example. Ensure they can safely start and stop before you go out and that they know right and left. Agree on some simple commands they will follow and alert them to potential hazards on the route and how you will deal with them.

Above all, ensure they enjoy cycling to school. Starting early means there's potential to turn this into a habit your child will have for a lifetime. Happy cycling!
